Known as the “Canyon of the East”, Letchworth State park is one of the most scenic area in the East coast in USA.
The Genesee river flows through the gorge which cascades over in three major waterfalls and is surrounded by lush green forest which makes it more enticing. The State park has 66 miles of hiking trails and trails for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. You can experience the Letchworth through the hot air balloon which is one of the highlights. In summer you can experience the Park with the guided walks, whitewater rafting, kayaking and history and performing arts program offered by the state park. Winter activities include snow tubing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
The historic Glen Iris Inn which looks like a blast from the past offers overnight accommodations and is open to the public for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The silence and the serenity surrounding the Inn makes it an astounding place to relax and enjoy nature. The Maple-wood Lodge is in the middle of Letchworth State Park at the entrance to the High-banks Camping Area. It is ideal for snowmobilers as it connects to the NYS snowmobile trail system.
We got to know about this park from a cousin of mine. We included this in our schedule as it was on the way back from Niagara, but were not disappointed. This does not match up to the Grand Canyon of the west in its sheer size, but it is a beautiful place worth visiting again and again. There are a smaller number of visitors which makes it worthwhile to visit if you are looking for a peaceful place. This is a stunning park with scenery on all sides. You can even see the train over the trestle near the falls, which seems to be out of the movies. We met a person from the nearby village who was kind enough to tell us about some fascinating things about the park. He even told us that he has been visiting the place since childhood every week!! #Letchworthstatepark
