An engineering marvel, Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel mesmerizingly transforms from a bridge to a tunnel and then back to a bridge again. The birds eye view of the bridge make it look magical as the bridge disappears midway into the ocean and then again resurfaces back.

Nearly 18 miles long, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is one of the engineering wonders of the world. It has captured the world’s attention as an important east coast travel convenience and a tourist attraction. It connects Virginia, Delaware and Maryland crossing over and under open waters where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It connects Virginia mainland at Virginia Beach near Norfolk. It’s a unique experience to travel across the Bridge-Tunnel. There is a Restaurant and gift shops on the bridge where they have a lot of items from Virginia on display to shop for remembrance. In 1964 The Bridge-Tunnel was selected as one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world. Occasionally, the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel experiences strong winds that will result in the restriction of normal traffic. 

Having an engineer in the family who loves anything, and everything related to engineering, this Bridge-Tunnel was on our bucket list. On our way back from a trip to Virginia we stopped at Norfolk for the night. We started our day with a beautiful weather to see the incredible view of the Virginia Beach. The drive over the bridge with breathtaking views, the ships on the horizon and the smell of the saltwater made all this drive worthwhile. The sea gulls flying over the sea made the view very picturesque. If you are a camera buff and are looking for the perfect post card moment, please be sure to stop at the scenic overlook. There is ample space for parking cars and there are viewing machines to magnify the view of the bay. You may even be lucky enough to spot some dolphins.  The scenic overdrive also has a pier for fishing where you could stay all day looking at the beautiful blue water all around. It was exhilarating to get into the tunnel wondering how deep in the waters were we and amazed by the way the tunnel has been built. Heading up north we drove through the beautiful countryside of Delaware which is still so fresh in our memories.

Finally, I would reiterate please do not forget your camera and check on the weather to avoid rain and windy times. It’s a must visit place!
